April 25 2009![]() ![]() Calypso-themed concert pits top artistes against each other...
Coming fresh on the heels of recent featured performances at Trinidad's Carnival, Canadian Calypso stars are sharpening their lyrical weapons to do battle at a transformed Steelworkers Union Hall in downtown Toronto. Leading the charge is last year's winner of the coveted "Kaiso 365" Calypso Monarch competition Macomeri Fifi, along with sister artistes Susan G, Spice, and Lady Pearl. The guys at the microphone - King Cosmos, Structure, Decarra and Jayson - are already boasting that they will show the gals that Calypso is a man's world and they are planning to send them packing... or in the words of a well-known old calypso lavway, "...pack she back to she Ma".
Heating things up musically will be a 'live' backing band led by arranger / trumpeter Jan Morgan and featuring Chris Wilson, (keys / sax), Gerry Williams (bass) and Sammy Clarke on percusssion. The showdown takes place at 25 Cecil St. on Saturday, April 25th at 8:00pm. The venue relatively small so book your tickets early by calling OCPA's Hotline (416) 795-2722. Admission is $20 (advance) and $25. at the door.
